The traditional home of the Ngamadjidji Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung people, the Grampians account for 80 percent of all the aboriginal rock art in Victoria and Australia's longest running Aboriginal cultural centre, Brambuk, is located in the town. The first white settler was Charles Browning Hall who set out in search of a suitable grazing run in 1841. By following aboriginal tracks he came upon the gap which now bears his name.
